7 Signs Someone Is Casing Your House
Burglars rarely strike blind. Most break-ins are preceded by days — sometimes weeks — of someone quietly learning your routine. Spot it early, and you can stop it before it starts.

Watch for these signs:
1. The same stranger, repeatedly.
One passerby is nothing. The same person walking, jogging, or parked near your home across several days is a pattern.
2. Strangers knocking with strange stories.
"Wrong address." "Selling something." "Checking your roof." A common tactic: knock to see if anyone's home, then glance inside while you answer.
3. Markings on your property.
Chalk marks, tape, or string on fences, mailboxes, or curbs. Burglars have long used symbols to flag houses — vulnerable occupant, good target, dogs present.
4. Your trash situation being studied.
Someone photographing or going through bins may be looking for proof of valuables — new TV boxes are a classic tell.
5. A car that idles too long.
Different cars, same behavior: parked with the engine running, facing your house, no one getting out.
6. Missing or tampered utility meters.
If someone claims to be from the utility company but won't show ID, they may want a look at your entry points — or inside.
7. Flyers accumulating… then disappearing.
Marketers who get no answer leave flyers. Thieves remove them so the house looks occupied. Check yours after trips.
